Weekend track work scheduled for October 14-15


No track work on Sunday, October 16, due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Event

Metro will advance important track work on the Red, Blue, Orange and Yellow lines from 10 p.m. Friday, October 14, through system closing on Saturday, October 15.

On Sunday, October 16, the Metrorail system will open two hours early – at 5 a.m. and suspend all track work for the day due to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial events. [more info]

Customers should take note of the following service impacts:

Red Line – 10 p.m., Friday through closing on Saturday

  • Red Line trains will share one track between Shady Grove and Twinbrook for platform repairs.
  • Customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time.

Blue and Orange Lines – from 10 p.m. Friday through closing on Saturday

  • Orange and Blue Line trains will share one track between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory while crews replace rail fasteners and make tunnel repairs.
  • Orange Line trains will share one track between Vienna and West Falls Church while personnel replace cross ties and insulators.
  • Orange Line trains will depart endpoint terminals every 24 minutes.
  • Blue Line trains will depart endpoint terminals every 24 minutes.
  • Customers traveling on the Blue and Orange lines should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time.

Blue and Yellow Lines – 10 p.m. Friday through closing on Saturday

  • Blue and Yellow Line trains will share one track between National Airport and Braddock Road as personnel conduct rail renewal work.
  • Blue Line trains will depart endpoint terminals every 24 minutes.
  • Yellow Line trains will depart endpoint terminals every 24 minutes operate between Huntington and Mt. Vernon Sq. stations.
  • Blue and Yellow line customers should allow about 20 minutes of additional travel time.

Weekday Service Information

During the week of October 11-14, trains will share one track on the Red, Blue and Green Lines. Customers should note the following minor service impacts:

Red Line – 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday

  • Red Line single tracking between Rhode Island Ave. and Fort Totten (rail and tie renewal).
  • Every other Red Line train traveling in the direction of Silver Spring will terminate at New York Ave. and return to Shady Grove.

Red Line – 10 p.m. through closing Tuesday through Thursday

  • Red Line single tracking between Friendship Heights and Grosvenor (rail renewal and tunnel leak repairs).
  • Red Line single tracking between New York Ave. and Rhode Island Ave. (rail and tie renewal).
  • No delays expected.

Orange Line – 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday

  • Orange Line single tracking between Vienna and West Falls Church (rail and tie renewal).
  • No delays expected.

Blue Line – 10 p.m. through closing Tuesday through Thursday

  • Blue Line single tracking between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road (floating slab repairs).
  • No delays expected.

Blue Line – 10 p.m. through closing Tuesday through Thursday

  • Blue Line single tracking between Braddock Road and Van Dorn Street (rail and insulator renewal).
  • No delays expected.

Green Line and Yellow Line – 10 p.m. through closing Wednesday through Thursday

  • Green and Yellow Line single tracking between U Street and Georgia Ave. (rail renewal work).
  • No delays expected.

Metro is advancing a six-year, $5 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that is focused on safety and bringing the Metro system into a state of good repair. In FY2012, the CIP includes projects to replace escalators; retrofit track; replace critical track circuitry and equipment along the right of way; rehabilitate third-rail power systems, running rail and track pads; modernize 12 stations; replace 100 Metrobuses and the rehabilitate 100 more; renovate three bus garages; and install 30 new track turnouts.
