Metro track work for weekend of Feb. 3-5


Buses replace trains on sections of the Blue and Orange lines

Metro will continue efforts to rebuild the rail system over the weekend of February 3-5. The work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and continue through system closing on Sunday.

Orange and Blue Lines

  • Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday, shuttle buses will replace Orange Line trains between Court House and Foggy Bottom and Blue Line trains between Pentagon and Foggy Bottom to allow for rail fastener renewal, insulator replacement and sludge removal from the tunnel beneath the Potomac River.
  • Two stations — Rosslyn and Arlington Cemetery — will be closed.
  • Free shuttle bus service will be provided between Court House, Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom, and between Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery, Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom.
  • Orange Line trains will operate in two segments: between Vienna and Court House every 20 minutes, and between Foggy Bottom and New Carrollton at normal weekend service levels.
  • Blue Line trains will operate in two segments: between Franconia-Springfield and Mt. Vernon Square via the Yellow Line bridge at normal weekend service levels, and between Foggy Bottom and Largo Town Center at normal weekend service levels.
  • Customers traveling through the work zone should allow 20-30 minutes of additional travel time.
  • Friday night last trains before work begins:

    Blue Line
    Eastbound: Depart Franconia-Springfield at 9:12 p.m., at Foggy Bottom 9:43 p.m., arrive at Largo Town Center at 10:16 p.m.
    Westbound: Depart Largo Town Center at 9:11 p.m., at Pentagon 9:52 p.m., arrive at Franconia-Springfield at 10:15 p.m.

    Orange Line
    Eastbound: Depart Vienna at 9:28 p.m., at Foggy Bottom 9:53 p.m., arrive at New Carrollton at 10:25 p.m.
    Westbound: Depart New Carrollton at 9:18 p.m., at Court House 9:55 p.m., arrive at Vienna at 10:15 p.m.
      
    Last Train Information

    On Friday and Saturday:
    Last eastbound Blue Line Train from Franconia-Springfield will depart at 2:07 a.m. (22 minutes earlier than normal). Last westbound Blue Line train from Largo will arrive at Foggy Bottom 2:54 a.m., leave Pentagon at 3:40 a.m., and arrive at Franconia-Springfield at 4:03 a.m.

    Last eastbound Orange Line Train from Vienna will depart at 2:10 a.m. (15 minutes earlier than normal). Last westbound Orange Line train from New Carrollton will arrive at Foggy Bottom 3:10 a.m., leave Court House 3:35 a.m., and arrive at Vienna at 3:55 a.m.

    On Sunday:
    Last eastbound Blue Line Train from Franconia-Springfield will depart at 11:07 p.m. (22 minutes earlier than normal). Last westbound Blue Line train from Largo will arrive at Foggy Bottom 11:54 p.m., and leave Pentagon at 12:40 a.m., arrive at Franconia-Springfield at 1:03 a.m.

    Last eastbound Orange Line Train from Vienna will depart at 11:10 p.m. (15 minutes earlier than normal). Last westbound Orange Line train from New Carrollton will arrive at Foggy Bottom 12:10 a.m., leave Court House 12:35 a.m., and arrive at Vienna at 12:55 a.m.

Red Line

  • Red Line trains will single track between Van Ness and Friendship Heights to allow for rail fastener renewal, leak repairs and track bed cleaning, and between New York Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue for DDOT bridge work.
  • Trains will depart Shady Grove and Glenmont every 15 minutes throughout the weekend.
  • On Saturday and Sunday between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m., additional trains operate between Van Ness and New York Avenue every 15 minutes, resulting in service every 7-8 minutes through Downtown.
  • Customers traveling through the work zone should allow 10-15 minutes of additional travel time.

Yellow and Green Lines

  • No work is scheduled this weekend on the Green or Yellow lines. Trains will operate on a regular weekend schedule.

Metro is advancing a six-year, $5 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that is focused on safety and bringing the Metro system into a state of good repair. In FY2012, the CIP includes projects to replace escalators; retrofit track; replace critical track circuitry and equipment along the right of way; rehabilitate third-rail power systems, running rail and track pads; modernize 12 stations; replace 100 Metrobuses and the rehabilitate 100 more; renovate three bus garages; and install 30 new track turnouts.
