Update on Metro employee injured at Shady Grove Rail Yard

The Metro employee struck by a train at Shady Grove Yard Tuesday, May 29, remains listed in critical condition today.

Metro has an ongoing investigation into the incident. Preliminary findings include:

  • The incident occurred at 12:55 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2012
  • The employee, a mechanic with 28 years of experience, was struck by a non-revenue 4-car train in the car wash facility at Shady Grove Yard.
  • Montgomery County Fire responded at 1:05 p.m.
  • The injured employee was rescued from under the first car.
  • An eyewitness reported that the employee stepped into the path of the lead railcar.

Metro Transit Police, Office of Emergency Management, Car Maintenance, Office of Rail Transportation and Department of System Safety & Environmental Management responded to the scene and performed an initial on-site investigation.

National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Transit Administration and Tri-State Oversight Committee representatives also responded to the scene.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and the investigation remains ongoing.
