Final public meeting for Metrobus 14th Street Line study to be held Thursday, June 21
Metro asks riders for input on draft recommendations for improvements
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the District Department of Transportation have been studying ways of improving transit service on 14th Street NW since late 2011. The study has focused on Metrobus routes 52, 53, and 54; traffic issues along 14th Street; and potential new services and alignments.
The final public meeting for the study will take place on Thursday, June 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the community room of the Metrobus Northern Division, 4627 14th Street NW, Washington, DC. The facility is located at the corner of 14th and Decatur Streets, and is accessible by Metrobus routes 52, 53 and 54. [map & directions]
The meeting is open to all members of the public and no advance registration is required. Participants may drop in any time between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to view the information and offer their feedback. The format will be “open house” style, meaning that no presentation will be given. Instead, the project team will set up a series of display boards with preliminary recommendations for improvements. Participants will be able to walk through and view the boards, and provide their input to project staff on which ideas they think will be most effective and what other enhancements they would like to see.
Following the June 21 public meeting, the project team will refine the improvements based on input, complete a final report for the study and make recommendations to the Metro Board for approval in summer 2012.
The Metrobus 14th Street Line routes run from the Takoma Metrorail station west to 14th Street, then south on 14th to McPherson Square. The 52 and 54 routes then continue on different paths to L’Enfant Plaza. The 14th Street Line currently has around 14,000 passengers on an average weekday, one of the largest riderships in the Metrobus system.
The 14th Street Line Study is the latest in a series of comprehensive evaluations of Metrobus “Priority Corridors.” Metro and its partner agencies in the Washington metropolitan region have been studying service and operations on the Metrobus network’s busiest lines since 2006, and making gradual improvements including restructured routes, limited-stop services and other enhancements.
