Dupont Circle escalator project milestone: Demolition begins on 3rd escalator

Project remains on schedule

The project to replace the bank of escalators at the south entrance of Dupont Circle station reached a major milestone earlier this week when work crews began demolishing and removing the third and final escalator.

Once the demolition of the third escalator is complete, crews will install the final two escalators. All replacement escalators are new, standard size, industrial-grade units that will improve safety and reliability.  One new escalator is already installed at the entrance and is available to serve as a stairway in the event of an emergency.

The project remains on schedule for completion in October.

Replacement of Dupont Circle's south entrance escalators is part of Metro’s multi-year plan to improve escalator and elevator reliability across the system. Under the current plan, 94 escalators are scheduled for full replacement over the next seven years.
