Metro weekend track work August 3-5, 2012


Normal service on Blue, Yellow & Green lines; buses replace trains on portions of Red & Orange lines

Metro's rebuilding efforts will continue over the weekend of August 3-5, 2012, with scheduled track work on the Red and Orange lines only. Trains on the Blue, Yellow and Green lines will operate on a regular weekend schedule.

Red Line

On the Red Line, buses will replace trains between Fort Totten and Union Station to allow for tie and insulator renewal, structural work, fiber optic cable installation, and DDOT bridge work near NoMa-Gallaudet U station. Red Line trains will operate in two segments throughout the weekend:

  • Between Glenmont and Fort Totten every 10 minutes during daytime hours and at regular weekend intervals at other times
  • Between Union Station and Shady Grove every 10 minutes during daytime hours and at regular weekend intervals at other times

Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Fort Totten and Union Station.  Three stations -- Brookland, Rhode Island Ave, and NoMa-Gallaudet U -- will be closed.  Customers traveling between Fort Totten and Downtown DC may wish to consider using Green Line service as an alternate route.

  • Express buses will operate between Fort Totten and Union Station only.  Customers using express buses should add 20 minutes to their travel time.
  • Local buses will operate between Fort Totten and Union Station, making intermediate stops at Brookland, Rhode Island Ave and NoMa-Gallaudet U stations.  Customers using local buses should add 30 minutes to their travel time.

Orange Line

On the Orange Line, buses will replace trains between Vienna and East Falls Church to allow for testing associated with the Silver Line Metrorail extension, as well as tie and insulator renewal. Orange Line trains will operate between East Falls Church and New Carrollton at regular weekend intervals. Buses will replace Orange Line trains between Vienna and East Falls Church. Three stations -- Vienna, Dunn Loring and West Falls Church -- will be closed.

  • Express shuttle buses will operate between Vienna and East Falls Church only.  Customers using express buses should add 15 minutes to their travel time.
  • Local shuttle buses will operate between Vienna and East Falls Church, with intermediate stops at Dunn Loring and West Falls Church stations.  Customers using local buses should add 40 minutes to their travel time.

Metro is advancing Metro Forward, a six-year, $5 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that is focused on safety and bringing the Metro system into a state of good repair. In FY2012, Metro Forward includes projects to replace escalators; retrofit track; replace critical track circuitry and equipment along the right of way; rehabilitate third-rail power systems, running rail and track pads; modernize 12 stations; replace 100 Metro buses and the rehabilitate 100 more; renovate three bus garages; and install 30 new track turnouts.
