*** ORIGINAL RELEASE FOLLOWS ***

Metro personnel are working to repair a broken rail on the Green Line outside Naylor Road.  The issue was detected shortly before 8:30 a.m. today, and the affected track was immediately taken out of service.

Green Line trains will single tracking between Naylor Road and Southern Avenue until the 39-foot section of rail is replaced.

Broken rails can result from the physical expansion and contraction of the metal rails as temperature changes.  Metal expands in heat and contracts in cold.  Rail breaks occur more frequently during extremely cold temperatures or following large swings in temperatures.

The current ambient temperature is 18 degrees.
