Metro to begin elevator modernization project at L'Enfant Plaza Station

3 of 4 elevators to be taken out of service for concurrent work

Later this week, Metro will begin modernizing three of four elevators at L'Enfant Plaza Station as part of the ongoing Metro Forward capital rebuilding effort.  The project is intended to improve the reliability and safety of the elevators, which have not undergone a major renovation since the station opened in 1977.

The three elevators that will undergo modernization are:

  • Street elevator to mezzanine
  • Mezzanine to Green/Yellow platform toward Branch Ave & Huntington
  • Mezzanine to Green/Yellow platform toward Greenbelt

The elevator between the Blue/Orange platform and the northbound Green/Yellow platform will remain in service.

During the modernization project, technicians will replace all critical components of the elevators, including the cabs, motors and control systems. By advancing the three elevator projects at the same time, Metro will inconvenience customers for a shorter period of time overall.

The work is expected to start late this week and continue through May 2013.  Customers will be kept updated on the exact start date through MetroAlerts.

During the project, free shuttle bus service will be available upon request from Archives Station (for Green/Yellow line customers) and Federal Center SW (for Blue/Orange customers).  To request a shuttle, ask any station manager or call (202) 962-1825.

Travel tips:

  • Most customers who normally transfer between rail lines at L'Enfant Plaza can travel via Metro Center and Gallery Place stations to complete their trip entirely on Metrorail.
  • Customers transferring between the Blue/Orange lines and southbound Green/Yellow lines can transfer across the platform at Archives Station, rather than using shuttle bus service.  (From L'Enfant Plaza, take northbound Green or Yellow line train one stop, and then transfer at Archives to a southbound Green or Yellow line train.)
