Metro weekend system rebuilding work March 8-10


Buses replace trains on portions of Orange and Blue lines; single tracking on Red, Green and Yellow lines

The ongoing effort to rebuild and upgrade the Metrorail system to provide safer and more reliable service will continue over the weekend of March 8-10, 2013, on all lines. The work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and continue through system closing on Sunday.

Orange Line

  • Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly to allow for platform reconstruction, rail joint and fastener renewal, grout pad rehabilitation and communication system upgrades. Two stations will be closed: Minnesota Ave and Deanwood.
  • In addition, trains will single track between East Falls Church and West Falls Church to allow for signal system integration with the new Silver Line extension.
  • Orange Line trains will operate in two segments throughout the weekend: between Vienna and Stadium-Armory every 20 minutes, and between New Carrollton and Cheverly every 20 minutes.
  • Shuttle bus service will operate on two routes: Local buses will operate between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly serving all intermediate stations; add up to 30 minutes of travel time. Express buses will operate between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly stations only; add up to 20 minutes of travel time.
  • Note: To allow for bus connections, the last train of the night from New Carrollton to Cheverly will depart 50 minutes earlier than normal -- at 1:46 a.m. on Friday night, at 12:46 a.m. EST on Saturday night (an hour earlier due to Daylight Saving Time), and at 10:46 p.m. on Sunday night.

Blue Line

  • Free shuttle buses will replace Blue Line trains between Stadium-Armory and Benning Road to allow for platform reconstruction, rail joint and fastener renewal, grout pad rehabilitation and communication system upgrades.
  • Blue Line trains will operate in two segments throughout the weekend: between Franconia-Springfield and Stadium-Armory every 20 minutes, and between Largo Town Center and Benning Road every 20 minutes.
  • Customers using shuttle buses to travel through the work zone should add up to 15 minutes to their travel time.
  • Note: To allow for bus connections, the last train of the night from Largo Town Center to Benning Road will depart 14 minutes earlier than normal -- at 2:10 a.m. on Friday night, at 1:10 a.m. EST on Saturday night (an hour earlier due to Daylight Saving Time), and at 11:10 p.m. on Sunday night.

Red Line

  • Trains will single track between Judiciary Square and Rhode Island Avenue to allow for track renewal and communication system upgrades.
  • Throughout the weekend, trains between Shady Grove and Glenmont will operate every 20 minutes.
  • Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, additional trains will operate between Shady Grove and Judiciary Square, resulting in service about every 10 minutes between those stations.
  • Customers on the eastern side of the Red Line should allow about 10 minutes of additional travel time.

Green/Yellow Lines

  • Green and Yellow line trains will single track between L'Enfant Plaza and Mt Vernon Square to allow for track maintenance and ceiling tile replacement.
  • Yellow Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between Huntington and Mt Vernon Sq only.
  • Green Line trains will operate every 20 minutes between Branch Ave and Greenbelt.
  • Customers should allow 10 minutes of additional travel time.

Metro is advancing Metro Forward, a six-year, $5 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) that is focused on safety and bringing the Metro system into a state of good repair. Metro Forward includes projects to replace escalators; retrofit track; replace critical track circuitry and equipment along the right of way; rehabilitate third-rail power systems, running rail and track pads; modernize 12 stations; replace 100 Metro buses and the rehabilitate 100 more; renovate three bus garages; and install 30 new track turnouts.
