Metro begins online sales of Fourth of July SmarTrip® card
First-of-its-kind commemorative card for Independence Day
Metro today began accepting online orders for 2013 Commemorative Fourth of July SmarTrip® cards at wmata.com.
Featuring a patriotic fireworks display amid a skyline image of the Nation’s Capital, the reusable plastic card comes pre-loaded with a One-Day Pass that provides unlimited travel on Metrorail on the day it is first used. Once the One-Day Pass is used, customers can reload the commemorative card and use it like any standard SmarTrip® card.
Each commemorative card costs $14, which is $5 less than the cost of purchasing a SmarTrip® card and One-Day Pass separately.
Metro is encouraging all July 4 visitors to use SmarTrip cards if possible. SmarTrip is the preferred way to pay for Metrorail and Metrobus trips because it is faster -- thereby allowing Metro to reduce crowding and help people move safely and efficiently through the system - an important consideration on a day such as July 4. Today, nearly 90 percent of all transactions are made with a SmarTrip card, rather than a paper farecard.
Using a SmarTrip card also allows customers to avoid a $1-per-trip surcharge for trips taken using a paper farecard.
