Red Line update 4 - Two-track service restored; Silver Spring reopened

As of 9:20 p.m., normal two-track operation has been restored between Takoma and Forest Glen; Red Line trains are no longer single tracking following a clear track inspection and operation of a no-passenger "test train" through the area.

In addition, Silver Spring Station has fully reopened.  Passengers can now enter and exit the station for Red Line service.

The Red Line service disruption began shortly after 6 p.m. as an 8-car train that was not carrying passengers was entering Silver Spring Station. A report of smoke, then fire, was reported from under the third car of the train, Car #1091. Montgomery County Fire responded and extinguished the fire.  There were no injuries.  Rail service was initially suspended between Takoma and Forest Glen with limited shuttle bus service provided between Takoma, Silver Spring and Forest Glen.  Single track service was restored at 7:30 p.m., although trains continued to bypass Silver Spring Station.  At 8 p.m., Silver Spring Station reopened for exiting passengers only.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.  The cause is believed to be mechanical in nature; foul play is not suspected.
