Station employee charged with embezzlement

Prince Egyir

Metro Transit Police today charged Prince Egyir with embezzlement in Alexandria General District Court for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Egyir, 43, worked as a Metrorail station manager in Virginia.

The Metro Transit Police undercover investigation found that Egyir fraudulently collected paper fare cards from riders whose cards did not open the fare gates due to insufficient fare or other issues.  The paper cards were collected by Egyir without being processed through the fare gate, leaving residual value on the card. Egyir transferred the value from the paper fare cards he collected onto SmarTrip cards for the purpose of reselling them.

Egyir was arrested by MTPD detectives yesterday and made his first court appearance today.

Egyir was found to have 10 paper fare cards on him at the time of his arrest. He was immediately suspended and will face internal charges that could result in termination.
