Metro rebuilding work July 12-14

Buses replace trains on a portion of the Red Line

Metro's multi-year rebuilding effort will continue over the weekend of July 12-14 with service adjustments on the Red, Orange and Blue lines beginning at 10 p.m. Friday night and continuing through system closing on Sunday.

Overview
This weekend, rebuilding work will result in service adjustments for riders on the eastern portion of the Red Line, with buses replacing trains between Silver Spring and NoMa-Gallaudet stations. Outside this zone, Red Line trains will operate every 10 minutes during daytime hours and at regular weekend intervals at other times (every 15-20 minutes).

In addition, a work zone on the Orange and Blue lines will result in trains operating every 16 minutes, rather than every 12 minutes.

Crews on the Red Line will replace wooden rail ties, renew third-rail insulators, advance platform reconstruction projects, improve track substructure conditions and install new communication equipment.  In addition, DDOT will continue construction on the New York Avenue bridge.  On the Orange and Blue lines, crews will perform track maintenance, fastener renewal and ceiling tile replacement between McPherson Square and Smithsonian stations.

There is no scheduled work this weekend on the Yellow or Green lines. Trains on these lines will operate at normal weekend intervals, with Yellow Line trains operating to/from Fort Totten.  Normal weekend intervals are every 12 minutes during daytime hours and every 15-20 minutes at other times.

Metro is investing $5.5 billion to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more. It represents the largest capital investment -- and work effort -- since the system's original construction in the early 1970s.
