MEDIA ADVISORY: Metro to break ground on new bus facility that will result in improved service for thousands of riders
On Monday, Metro will host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new, state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly Metrobus facility in Fairfax County that will pave the way for newer buses for nearly 20,000 riders, generate 300 construction jobs, and allow for redevelopment in an Old Town Alexandria neighborhood.
The new Cinder Bed Road Metrobus facility will replace Metro’s nearly 70-year-old Royal Street Bus Garage, which has far exceeded its useful life and cannot accommodate the newer buses in Metro’s fleet. More than 18,000 daily riders of buses that originate at Royal Street today travel aboard buses that are at least 13 years old. The new facility will enable Metro to run modern buses on these routes.
