Weekend Metrorail service adjustments February 14-17 to allow for rebuilding

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of February 14-17 with service adjustments beginning Saturday at midnight (new start time) and continuing through system closing on Monday.

Orange, Blue, Green and Yellow Line trains will operate on a regular weekend schedule. Buses will replace trains on the Red Line between Woodley Park and Metro Center. Previously scheduled rebuilding work on the Orange and Blue lines has been cancelled, resulting in regular weekend service.

Presidents Day service information
On Presidents Day, Monday, February 17, Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. and close at midnight. Trains will operate on a Saturday schedule. Parking at all Metro-owned lots and garages is free on Presidents Day.

Metro is investing $5.5 billion to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more. It represents the largest capital investment -- and work effort -- since the system's original construction in the early 1970s.

Travel Tips

  • Metrobus service may provide an alternate travel option for some riders. To check, plan your trip using Trip Planner and select the "bus only" option
  • If traveling between Fort Totten and downtown, consider using Green/Yellow service instead
  • Riders transferring between the Orange/Blue lines to Green/Yellow should make the transfer at L'Enfant Plaza
  • If traveling to Disney On Ice at Verizon Center:
    • Consider starting your trip from stations on the east side of the Red Line for a direct ride to Verizon Center. Parking is available at Glenmont, Wheaton, Forest Glen and Fort Totten stations.
    • If traveling from west side of the Red Line (e.g. Shady Grove), consider walking the short distance between the Metro Center bus stop at 11th & G streets and Verizon Center (7th & G streets), rather than boarding a train between Metro Center and Gallery Place
  • Before traveling, consult the trip planner at wmata.com to check the special schedule and reduce your wait time. (Trip Planner is updated to reflect weekend rebuilding schedules on Fridays; please check on Friday afternoon or later.) You will experience the additional wait time on the platform. Once your train departs the station, it is not expected to encounter additional delays en route.
