Metrorail weekend service adjustments May 9-11 to allow for rebuilding

UPDATE: The previously scheduled service adjustments at Greenbelt Station have been cancelled.  Instead, Green Line trains will operate on a regular weekend schedule between Greenbelt and Branch Ave. On Saturday and Sunday nights from 10:00 p.m. until closing, passengers at West Hyattsville will board all trains on the Greenbelt platform as crews continue testing of the 7000-series rail cars.

Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of May 9-11 with service adjustments beginning at 10 p.m. Friday night and continuing through system closing on Sunday.

Trains on the Blue and Yellow Lines will operate regular weekend service. Orange Line trains will operate every 24 minutes. Red Line trains will run every 15 minutes between Shady Grove and Glenmont, with additional trains between Shady Grove & NoMa-Gallaudet during daytime hours. Green Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals, except at Greenbelt Station on Saturday only (see below).

Early Opening Saturday Morning for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 for customers traveling to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. The start line is accessible from Metro Center (Red/Blue/Orange lines), Federal Triangle (Blue/Orange lines) or Smithsonian (Blue/Orange lines).

Metro is investing $5.5 billion to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more. It represents the largest capital investment -- and work effort -- since the system's original construction in the early 1970s.

Red Line  Red Line 
Trains every 10-15 minutes

Red Line trains will operate as follows from 10 p.m. Friday through closing Sunday:

  • Between Shady Grove & Glenmont: Every 15 minutes throughout the weekend
  • Between Van Ness & NoMa-Gallaudet: Every 10-12 minutes from 9AM-9PM only

Work Performed: Crews will perform floating slab rehabilitation between Van Ness and Friendship Heights; fence and lighting installation between NoMa-Gallaudet and Rhode Island Avenue.

Travel Tips

  • Metrobus service may provide an alternate travel option for some riders. To check, plan your trip using Trip Planner and select the "bus only" option.
  • If traveling between Fort Totten and downtown, consider using Green/Yellow service instead. 
  • Before traveling, consult the trip planner at wmata.com to check the special schedule and reduce your wait time. (Trip Planner is updated to reflect weekend rebuilding schedules on Fridays; please check on Friday afternoon or later.) You will experience the additional wait time on the platform. Once your train departs the station, it is not expected to encounter additional delays en route.

Orange Line Orange Line 
Trains every 24 minutes

Orange Line trains will operate every 24 minutes throughout the weekend.

Work Performed: Crews will continue platform rehabilitation, grout pad replacement, and rail joint elimination between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly, along with fence and communications cable repair between East Falls Church and West Falls Church.

On Saturday and Sunday, from 10:00 p.m. until system closing, passengers at West Hyattsville will board all trains on the Greenbelt side. Crews will continue testing the new 7000-series railcars.
