Metro updates major track work calendar

Riders and event planners encouraged to use as planning tool

Metro has updated its major track work calendar through the end of 2014.

The calendar — available at wmata.com/trackwork — shows the date, affected stations and areas where buses will replace trains. Metro encourages community groups, organizations and event planners to consider the major track work calendar when planning events during the second half of the year.  

As previously announced, weekend track work where buses replace trains will now begin at midnight Saturday, rather than 10 p.m. Friday.  

Metro is now past the halfway mark of a six-year $5 billion capital improvement program to improve the safety and reliability of the system. By working aggressively on weekends, Metro has already significantly reduced the backlog of deferred maintenance that had built up over many years.  The investment to install new rail, ties, platforms, escalators, signals, lighting, communication systems, and more represents the largest capital investment -- and work effort -- since the system's original construction in the early 1970s.
