MEDIA ADVISORY: Tour Metro's New Stormwater Treatment Facility, Thursday, November 13, 2014
Metro and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' (MWCOG) Built Environment - Energy Advisory Committee (BE-EAC) will host a tour of Metro’s new stormwater treatment facility on Thursday, November 13, 2014. The tour provides an opportunity to look behind the scenes at this state of the art, energy efficient water treatment facility. The facility also demonstrates Metro’s commitment to maximizing the value of investment placed in the system while maintaining a commitment to safe and efficient operations.
The facility pumps 27,000 gallons of water per day from Metrorail tunnels near the Largo Town Center Station is designed to be “net zero." This means the total amount of energy used by the building for the pumping and water treatment process is equal to or less than the amount of renewable energy created annually from the on-site solar system.
Constructed to meet stricter regulatory requirements from the Maryland Department of the Environment as part of the Chesapeake Bay restoration plan, the facility supports Metro’s Sustainability Initiative and commitment to reducing energy consumption and minimizing operating costs.
