Metro responds to pedestrian bridge collapse between College Park and Greenbelt

Update 8:45 p.m.

Metro crews will continue working through the night to make repairs to the Green Line tracks at the site of today's pedestrian bridge collapse. Based on the latest assessment, it appears that repair work will last through Thursday morning's commute and may continue into the midday hours. As a result, Metro is advising customers who use Greenbelt Station of the following service information:

  • Greenbelt Station is expected to be CLOSED for the Thursday morning commute.
  • Metro will continue to provide free shuttle buses between Greenbelt and College Park stations. Riders using shuttle buses should add 20 minutes of travel time.
  • TIP: Customers who normally park at Greenbelt may wish to consider using New Carrollton or College Park stations for a faster trip.
  • Greenbelt is the only station affected by this disruption. Green Line service will operate normally between College Park and Branch Avenue stations. Yellow Rush+ trains also will operate to/from College Park.
  • Riders are encouraged to sign up for MetroAlerts for updated information.

Metro personnel are on scene at the site of a pedestrian bridge collapse onto the Green Line tracks between College Park and Greenbelt stations.

A portion of the concrete bridge collapsed onto the tracks shortly before 3 p.m. today after being struck by the boom of a rail crane operated by a Metro contractor.

The contractor, Skanska, was performing work to support the construction of a new track. There were no injuries.

Green Line service is expected to remain suspended through the evening rush hour and possibly into the night. Metro is providing free shuttle bus service between College Park and Greenbelt stations for affected customers. Riders traveling to or from Greenbelt should allow 30 minutes of additional travel time.

Green Line service between College Park and Branch Avenue stations is operating normally. In addition, Metro has extended some Yellow Line trains to/from College Park to supplement Green Line service.
