Metro's next generation of trains will be designed to accommodate all customers - and all kinds of trips. The new trains will improve upon the design of our previous trains and will replace the oldest trains in our current fleet.
Since the original design concept was developed in 2022, we've made changes to incorporate feedback from our customers, helping improve safety, reliability, and the overall customer experience.

Your new ride will feature enhanced security, improved ventilation and airflow, charging ports for electronic devices, energy-efficient heated flooring, and lighter exteriors made of aluminum.

More Space to Stand and Sit
Brand-new trains will offer updated seating configurations with more places to sit and stand than ever before.
Places to Park Your Gear
Dedicated space for bicycles, strollers, and luggage will make it easier and more comfortable to travel.
Separate Space for Wheelchairs
Our new trains will be designed with dedicated space for wheelchairs - separate from other dedicated space for bicycles, strollers, and luggage.
Safe and Spacious Connected Cars
The trains feature open passageways for moving between two cars, increasing safety, passenger flow, and capacity.
Easy-to-See Information Screens
Digital display screens will be larger and placed in locations that are more visible for all customers.
Timeline
The new trains will be rolling into Metro's railyards in late 2025. For a detailed look at the project's past, present, and future milestones, check out this timeline:
- 2021 - Contract awarded to Hitachi Rail Washington LLC
- 2022 - Groundbreaking at Hitachi's factory in Hagerstown, Maryland
- 2025 - Delivery of first pilot car
- 2026 - Deployment of new trains throughout the system
