Shady Grove entrance escalator replacement to begin May 16

Shady Grove Station Train and Pylon

On May 16, 2016, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing the entrance escalator at the west side (Rockville) entrance of Shady Grove station. The project will replace the current escalator, which was installed in 1984 and has exceeded its useful life, with a brand new escalator that is more durable and reliable. Metro's contractor, KONE, will install the new escalator as part of our ongoing project to replace 128 escalators across the Metrorail system.

How will this work affect my trip?
The west side entrance has one escalator, one concrete staircase and one elevator providing access to Shady Grove station. While the escalator is being replaced, customers will be able to use the concrete staircase. The street elevator will also remain in service during construction. Customers may avoid the construction by using the east side entrance.

How long will the project take?
This escalator replacement is expected to take about 4 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing.
