Impacts of SafeTrack Surge #6 on Metrobus Customers

Advisory Effective: 8/1/16 - 8/7/16

SafeTrack is Metro’s accelerated track work plan to address safety recommendations and rehabilitate the Metrorail system to improve safety and reliability. Each scheduled surge will have a significant impact on the level of rail service provided, with crowding and longer wait times for trains at many stations.

Customers who transfer to/from Metrobus are advised to plan accordingly by:

  • incorporating 60-90 minutes additional travel time
  • considering alternative travel options

SafeTrack Surge #6: Red Line trains will continuously single track between Takoma and Silver Spring from August 1 through August 7, 2016.

On weekdays:

  • Red Line trains will run between Shady Grove and NoMa every 6 minutes during AM/PM rush; every 12 minutes midday and evening.
  • Red Line trains will run between Glenmont and Grosvenor every 12 minutes.
  • After 10pm trains will run every 15 minutes.
  • Customers traveling between Fort Totten and Downtown DC should use the Green Line as an alternative.
  • All Red Line customers should consider alternate travel options and avoid traveling during rush-hour periods if possible.
  • Weekend train frequencies may change to coordinate with other planned track work on the Metrorail system. Weekend service information is posted in the Alerts & Advisories section

WHAT DOES SafeTrack MEAN FOR metrobus CUSTOMERS?

  1. Expect longer travel times, crowded trains. Limited train frequencies in and around the SafeTrack surge zone will create crowded platforms and trains and longer wait times for many. Consider avoiding this experience by traveling outside of peak hours or staying on bus service.
  2. Free bus-to-bus transfers. When possible, continue using Metrobus to your final destination. Transfers between bus routes are free when using SmarTrip. To find a bus-only trip, use our Trip Planner and choose the ‘Bus Only’ option. Metrobus options at Metrorail stations are shown below.
  3. Enhanced rush hour service available. Consider them during rush hour rather than Metrorail:
  • 80 Fort Totten Station - Brookland Station - Union Station - Gallery  Place - Metro Center - McPherson Square - Farragut North Station, Farragut South Station - Kennedy Center (regular timetable/enhanced timetable pending)
  • P6 Rhode Island Ave Station - Gallery Place - Metro Center - Archives Station - Waterfront Station - Navy Yard Station - Anacostia Station (regular timetable/enhanced timetable pending)
  • Y7 Silver Spring Station - Forest Glen Station - Wheaton Station - Glenmont Station - Georgia Ave. ICC Park & Ride Lot (regular timetable/enhanced timetable pending)
  • S9 MetroExtra 16th Street Limited Line - Silver Spring Station - Columbia Heights Station - McPherson Square Station - Franklin Square (regular timetable/enhanced timetable pending)
  • Ride On will run free weekday rush hour express shuttle bus service between Silver Spring, Takoma and Fort Totten and between Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center, Bethesda and Friendship Heights Metrorail stations.
