Permanent Bus Shelter Installation project

Advisory Effective: 4/8/24 - 10/1/24

En Español

As you may have noticed, many bus shelters at our Metrorail stations are showing their age, which are almost 50 years old! Between the shelters’ decades of wear-and-tear, unavailable replacement parts, and instances of vandalism, these bus shelters are no longer considered repairable.

Metro has developed a new shelter design that will replace those existing shelters with brand new, more cost-effective and modern shelters. Project efficiencies have reduced the new shelter design to a 70% cost savings per shelter. Our goal for the new shelter design is to achieve a balance between longevity, ease of maintenance, and accessibility while providing a modern look. These new shelters are part of Metro’s Better Bus program to improve your Metrobus experience.

During this initial phase of Metro’s bus shelter replacement program, a total of 33 shelters will be replaced at four Metro stations:

  • Fort Totten
  • Brookland-CUA
  • Rhode Island Ave
  • Addison Road

How will this work affect my trip?

The installation of the new shelters will require the temporary closure of certain bus bays. However, to minimize the disruptions to customers the temporary closures will occur in phases. This advisory will be updated with specific details for each station.

Throughout construction, all bus service will continue to operate. Follow all posted signs for the temporary bus stop locations. The Fort Totten station and all entrances will remain open.

How long will the project take?

Installation of all permanent bus shelters at the four stations will take approximately four months to complete. Construction will occur in phases at each station to minimize customer impact. Upon the completion of a phase, the bus bays will reopen for service.
