Gallery Place Escalator Replacement and Elevator Modernization

Escalator Replacement Project
In Summer 2025, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing four entrance escalators at Gallery Place Station’s Entrance A (7th and F Street, NW). The four escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. The escalators are being installed as part of an ongoing Escalator Replacement Project to replace 139 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028.
Elevator Modernization Project
In summer 2025, Metro will begin rehabilitating the platform elevator at Gallery Place Station. The work will take approximately three and a half months to complete and the elevator will be out of service during that time.
The project will improve elevator reliability by replacing and upgrading all major components, including a new passenger cab, controls, motors, and safety devices. This is part of Metro’s regular elevator maintenance program, which includes monthly and annual maintenance on all 350+ elevators and major rehabilitation work every 10-15 years.
Customer Impacts
- Two escalators will be out of service at a time during the Escalator Replacement work. While two escalators are being replaced, the remaining two escalators will remain operational, with one escalator going up and one escalator going down. The staircase will also remain open.
- One platform elevator will be closed during elevator modernization work. Free shuttle service will be provided from Gallery Place to Archives or Metro Center stations, as requested. The shuttle stop at Gallery Place will be located near the elevators on 7th St NW, between F St NW and G St NW.
