Virginia Square Escalator Replacement

Advisory Effective: 8/9/21 - 7/31/22

On August 9, 2021, Metro will begin a major capital project replacing the three entrance escalators at the Virginia Square Station. The project will replace the current escalators with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system over the next seven years.

How will this work affect my trip?

The entrance escalators will be replaced one at a time. During construction, customers will be able to access the station using the two open escalators and the elevator.

How long will the project take?

The replacement of all three escalators is expected to take approximately 11 months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing.

How can I stay informed about the project?

Additional information can be found on the Escalator, Canopy and Elevator Project page. Customers are also encouraged to sign up for MetroAlerts text or email messages to receive project updates and service information.
