Frequently Asked Questions
What are tactical bus lanes?
Tactical Bus Lanes (TBLs) are a low-cost and rapid implementation bus-only lane. A portion of the street is designated by signs and pavement markings for the preferential or exclusive use of buses, sometimes permitting limited use by other users such as right-turning vehicles and bicycles. The hours of operation can be 24 hours, daytime only, or peak periods (rush hours) only.
Will the demonstration bus lanes in Montgomery County and Prince George's county be permanent?
At the conclusion of the bus lanes demonstration we will work closely with our jurisdictional partners to identify next steps.
When and where will Metro install permanent bus lanes?
Throughout the tactical bus lanes pilot, Metro will work with our partner jurisdictions to determine whether they should be made permanent. We will also work with the jurisdictions to identify locations for future bus lanes.
What happens if I drive in a red bus lane?
If you travel illegally in a bus lane you will be subject to ticketing.
How will bus lanes be monitored?
Bus lanes will be monitored and enforced by the jurisdictions and will be treated like regular traffic offences.
How will this impact my commute?
Installation of the bus lanes will only involve paint, striping, and signage with minimal construction impacts to bus customers, community members and local businesses. Once implemented, Metrobus customers along those busy corridors where TBLs are implemented will be able to avoid heavy traffic congestion to get to their destination safely and on time! Other vehicles on the road will not be able to use the bus lanes - unless otherwise noted with signage.
