Transfers
To receive a rail-to-bus or bus-to-rail discount or to transfer free from bus to bus, you must use a SmarTrip card or your contactless credit or debit card (the same payment method must be used for each part of your trip). Learn more about how to pay your fare.
Bus to Bus
Pay your bus fare with a SmarTrip card or contactless credit or debit card and you may make unlimited Metrobus connections, including round trips, within two hours.
Bus to Rail
Pay your bus fare with a SmarTrip card or contactless credit or debit card and your fare will be reduced when transferring to Metrorail.
Rail to Bus
Pay your Metrorail fare using a SmarTrip card or contactless credit or debit card and your fare will be reduced when transferring to Metrobus and most local buses.
Transfers to Express Routes
A customer using a SmarTrip card or contactless credit or debit card transferring from a $2.25 regular-fare route to a $4.80 express route pays only the difference.
Farragut Crossing
Free transfer between the Red Line and Orange, Silver and Blue lines by exiting and entering through Farragut West and Farragut North.
Restriction
Pass product usage is not eligible for a transfer credit.
Regional Transit Partner Transfer Discounts
Must use the same SmarTrip card during your trip to receive the discount.

- Metrorail to ART: Free
- ART to Metrorail: $2.25 discount | Seniors/K-12 Students: $1.10 discount
- Fairfax Connector - includes the Reston Internal Bus System (RIBS)
- Metrorail to bus: $2.25 discount (making most rides free)
- Bus to Metrorail: $2.25 discount on Metrorail fares
- Bus to bus: free (if Express, $2.25 then pay step-up fare)
