King Street Roadway and Sidewalk Impacts

Advisory Effective: 5/1/26 - 6/1/26

Across three different weekends from May 1-June 1, King Street will be closed between Russell Rd and Daingerfield Rd to accommodate regional construction, with customers needing to follow road and pedestrian signage to detour to access King St-Old Town station. This work is being performed by the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) as part of its improvements at Alexandria station. Work hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. for each of the below impact dates:

Impacted Dates

  • Friday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m. until Monday, May 4 at 10:00 p.m.
  • Friday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. until Monday, May 18 at 10:00 p.m.
  • Friday, May 29 at 7:00 p.m. until Monday, June 1 at 10:00 p.m.

Traffic Impacts

  • Roadway impacts
    • King Street will be fully closed between Russel Rd and Daingerfield Rd, with traffic detoured to Duke St
    • Commonwealth Ave will remain open with single travel lane alternating traffic directed by flaggers
  • Sidewalk impacts
    • King St will be fully closed to pedestrians. Pedestrians should follow the below detour map to navigate this area during impacted dates.

Customer Information

With the full closure of King St’s sidewalk, pedestrians may access King St-Old Town station via two different routes:

  • Callahan Dr to Sunset Dr to Commonwealth Ave
  • Callahan Dr to Duke St

  • Construction zones sites will be clearly marked. For your safety, please stay clear of work areas and follow all posted signs & detour info.
  • Expect possible noise during construction work hours.
