Winter 2023 Red Line Construction

Project Dates:

December 18 - 30, 2023 - Farragut North station closed and no Red Line at Metro Center station
December 22 - 24, 2023 - Farragut North closed, no Red Line at Metro Center, Gallery Place, and Judiciary Sq closed

Purpose: Metro performed critical safety repairs to the Red Line tunnel and track infrastructure, upgraded signal and communications systems, and installed new platform edge lights at three Red Line stations.

Installed more than 15,000 linear feet of fiber-optic cables.
Replaced 3,159 feet of deteriorated rail to improve safety and service.
Added extra insulation to the third rail power cables to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Upgraded signal and communications systems.
Restored the deteriorated concrete ceiling above the tracks.
