Between Monday, Dec.18 and Saturday, Dec. 30, Metro will make critical Red Line safety repairs and other maintenance improvements. The work includes repairing a deteriorated concrete ceiling above both tracks which dates back to the earliest days of the Metro system. To complete the work safely and efficiently, Red Line service will be unavailable between Dupont Circle and Gallery Place.

Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Dupont Circle and Gallery Place to help you get where you need to go. Blue, Orange, and Silver line service will remain available at Metro Center, and Green and Yellow line service will remain available at Gallery Place.

We're completing the work during a time ridership is historically 40% lower to minimize customer impact. Completing the same work on weekends only would take at least three months.

While we're completing the critical ceiling repairs, we'll also get other essential maintenance work done to avoid future service disruptions. We're also planning to:

• Install new fiber-optic cables to improve signal and communications systems and pave the way for communications-based train control
• Install new, brighter platform edge lighting
• Replace grout pads (these are concrete slabs that anchor the tracks in place)
• Repair leaks in the tunnel
• Add extra insulation to the third rail to enhance safety in winter conditions

  • Free shuttle buses will replace trains
  • Blue, Orange, and Silver lines service available at Metro
    • Entrances at G Street NW at 11th and 13th streets will be closed, use entrances on 12th street to access station.
  • Green and Yellow lines available at Gallery Place
    • Entrance at Ninth & G streets NW will be closed
