American Heart Month
Each February, Metro observes American Heart Month by coordinating awareness-building activities with DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services (FEMS) to strengthen heart safety throughout the region. Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere – including on public transit. That’s why Metro and DC FEMS are working together to create a safer, more prepared transit environment.

Lifesaving AEDs Throughout the System
Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) provide critical support during cardiac emergencies when every second counts. AEDs are conveniently located in rail station kiosks across the Metro system, making them easy to access in an emergency.
CPR and AED-Trained Metro Personnel
Metro’s Station Managers are trained in CPR and AED response to ensure rapid action when a rider is in distress. Their quick intervention can significantly improve survival outcomes.
Empowering Riders to Act
During Heart Month, we encourage customers to familiarize themselves with the following actions in case of emergency:
- Notify station managers and other Metro personnel immediately
- Call 911
- Follow instructions from trained responders
Download the free PulsePoint app to receive alerts about nearby cardiac emergencies and help bridge the gap before first responders arrive. With just a few taps, you can be ready to make a lifesaving difference – on Metro and throughout the region.
Together, we can make our transit system safer – and help save lives.
