Silver Line Stations

Overview

Welcome aboard! The Silver Line Extension brings the Metrorail system into Loudoun County, Virginia, providing 11.4 miles of new track from the current terminus station at Wiehle-Reston East, stopping at Washington Dulles International Airport, and into Loudoun County. It includes six new Metrorail stations (Reston Town Center, Herndon, Innovation Center, Washington Dulles International Airport, Loudoun Gateway, and Ashburn).

The announcement of the November 15 opening date followed 18 weeks of testing, training, and safety certification efforts by Metro. Metro took control of the Silver Line Extension from the Metropolitan Area Airports Authority (MWAA) after the project achieved its Operational Readiness Date (ORD) on June 23, 2022. Since then, Metro has been testing the new tracks and equipment, and training staff at the stations, railyard, and maintenance facilities in preparation for opening to the public.

This second phase also includes a new, 90-acre rail yard with storage capacity for 168 railcars and maintenance facilities to service, inspect and clean the trains. The Maintenance of Way, Transportation, and Service & Inspection buildings at this rail yard have been awarded LEED Silver certification as part of Metro's sustainability commitment.
